About John Koenders

John Koenders Artist

John Koenders is one of Australia's leading realist artists, and was born in Holland in 1943. He is a direct descendant of the famous Dutch Master – Vincent van Gogh. Having been a professional artist for over 40 years, it is ironical that the details of his famous ancestry have only recently come to light. John was always inspired by the great Dutch Masters – Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and of course, Vincent van Gogh. He visited the great Art Museums of Europe, and this fostered his desire to paint and draw at a very early age. He won the European Scouting Art Award at twelve years of age , making him the youngest prize-winner since its inception.

Further studies of art in Europe and the University of Western Australia followed, and in 1968 John completed a study tour of England and Europe, with resulting successful private commissions and sales through the Victorian Artists' Society Cato Gallery.

John admires the magnificent work of Hans Heysen, and John's oils of gumtrees have often been compared to Heysen's. Further inspiration has been drawn from the old English Masters of watercolour, and he enjoys painting Australian scenes in the realist 'old English' style. The depth of colour, mellow tones, and fine detail obtained by this method has made John's watercolours highly sought after.

He paints from his Studio/Gallery- Mayfield Gallery in Arawata, in the beautiful Strzelecki Ranges, where many successful solo exhibitions have been held. His paintings have been purchased by collectors within Australia and in many countries of the world, and are held in noted private collections, including H.R.H. Princess Anne (The Princess Royal), Romina Power (daughter of Tyrone Power & wife of famous Italian star Al Banoe, Jeff Kennett, John Wood, Bud Tingwell, Peter Hitchener, Rob Gell, and past Premier of Victoria – Sir Rupert Hamer. His work was also purchased by an Australian Art Museum , and, due to many private commissions, can be found in corporate and private collections in all corners of the globe.

John has been a professional artist for over forty years, during which time he has won hundreds of awards and commendations and has judged many art exhibitions, world-wide. He has also had the honour of being the Feature Artist at many exhibitions Australia-wide, and has successfully exhibited in England and Europe. John has also been featured in many publications, including the National Australian Artist magazine. A book has been compiled of his work and is available at Mayfield Gallery or through his website.
